When can a teenager get their driver's license?

The Motor Vehicle Department will issue a driver’s license to individuals, who are at least 16 but less than 18, six month after they have obtained their permit and after they have successfully passed a road test administered by the MVD.

Additionally, the teen driver must also have satisfactorily completed an Arizona driver education program (like the one offered by Northstar), or have their parent or guardian certify in writing that they have completed at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night.

What type of license will my teen receive and what are the restrictions of that license?

A teen driver will be issued a Graduated Class G license if they are at least 16, but less than 18.

The restrictions of this type of license, as quoted by the MVD, are as follows:

For the first six months with a graduated driver license, drivers must not drive a motor vehicle between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. unless one of these conditions is met:

  • A parent or legal guardian with a valid Class A, B, C or D license occupies the front passenger seat.
  • You are driving directly to or from a sanctioned school-sponsored activity, place of employment, a sanctioned religious activity or a family emergency.
  • A teen with a Graduated Driver License shall not drive a motor vehicle containing more than one passenger under the age of 18 on a public highway unless one of these conditions is met:
  • The passengers are the driver’s siblings.
  • The driver is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with a valid Class A, B, C or D driver license who occupies the front passenger seat.

If the teen driver has no outstanding extensions of the restricted driving period or suspension of driving privileges during the completion of the first six months of restricted driving, the teen may drive without restriction until eligible to apply for a Class D driver license beginning at age 18.

What is included in Northstar's program for beginning drivers?

Eight (7) hours of classroom instruction plus behind the wheel driving lessons. Behind the wheel driving lessons can be purchased for six (6), eight (8), and ten (10) hour packages.

How are driving lessons scheduled?

Lessons are scheduled by appointment via telephone after the student obtains their permit.

Each driving session usually takes two (2) hours.

Does Northstar provide the car for behind the wheel lessons?

Yes. Students will be pick-up by a Northstar Driving trainer and taken out in Northstar’s vehicle which is equipped with dual brakes.

If the classroom portion was taken in high school, can the student take just the behind the wheel lessons?

Yes, the six (6) hour, eight (8) hour, or (10) hour options are available.

Will an auto insurance discount be given for this program?

Some insurance companies do offer a discount for teen drivers who take and pass a drivers training course. Upon successful completion of our training program, a certificate will be issued that you can give to your insurance agent. Please check with your individual insurance carrier directly to see if they offer discounts for drivers training programs.
